Rust Accelerator 0.25 L for Corten Steel and More - for 5 m2

Do you want your corten steel to oxidise in mere hours? Then this rust accelerator is the solution. Below, we explain what to look for and how it works. In short, this is the process: apply the accelerator and within a few minutes you can already see the steel starting to oxidise. After, on average, 10 hours, the coated surface will be completely rusted. Apply the accelerator with a roller, brush, or sponge. This bottle is enough for approximately 5 square meters. The thicker the coating, the faster the steel will oxidise.

Using rust accelerator on corten steel

Wovar offers various products made of corten steel. Examples include fire bowls, garden edging, and planters. Many of these products do not yet have the signature corten steel colour when you receive them. Instead, they are grey with maybe a few spots of rusty brown. It can take months for the product to be completely rusted if you let nature run its course. However, if you do not want to wait this long, rust accelerator is the perfect solution.

Apply the rust accelerator with a sponge, brush, or roller, preferably before placing the corten steel product in the garden. This bottle will cover about 5 m2 of corten steel. Let it set and dry for 10 hours before using the product in the garden. Note: after 10 hours, the rust can appear slightly patchy up close. This will quickly disappear over time, when nature takes over the oxidation process. No more waiting months for that beautiful rust colour. Instead, you can get the desired result after just one night.

We recommend leaving the corten steel product to dry in a garage or shed. This prevents the rain from washing the rust accelerator away before the oxidation process has even started.

How much rust accelerator do I need?

As mentioned before, you can cover approximately 5 m2 with this 250 ml bottle. Calculate the surface area of your corten steel product before ordering rust accelerator. These numbers are excluding the spikes of the garden edging. These spikes are dug into the ground, so we recommend skipping these to save rust accelerator for the visible parts.
