Frequently asked questions
What is a hinge hook?
A hinge hook is a holder for hinges. Specifically, hook and band hinges for gates or fences. A hinge hook consists of a backplate with a pin, or hook, on it. This is why it is also called a hinge pin. You attach the backplate to the frame, post, or wall next to the door. The pin points upwards and is the part that holds the hinge. The eye at the end of the strap hinge fits around the pin, creating a working hinge.
How do you mount a hinge hook?
Mounting a hinge hook is not difficult. The backplate of the hinge hook contains mounting holes, making it an easy job. The most used hinge hook is 16 mm. The mounting holes of this hinge hook have a 6 mm diameter, so you will need 5 mm screws. If you are working with hardwood, pre-drill the wood with a 3.5 mm hardwood drill bit. Are you going to attach the hinge hook to a brick or concrete wall? Then drill 5 mm wide holes and use 5 mm nylon wall plugs. Insert the wall plugs in the holes, hold the hinge hook in the correct position, and fasten it with screws.
Is a hinge hook adjustable?
Regular hinge hooks are not adjustable. However, adjustable hinge hooks do exist. These hinge hooks can change position, so they are sure to fit your gate.
Which hinge hook do I need?
Which hinge hook you need depends on a few different things. First, they need to be compatible with the strap hinges you are using. Regular strap hinges have a 19 mm eye, which fits around a 16 mm hinge hook. Smaller strap hinges, with a 13 mm eye, also exist. These are used with a 10 mm hinge hook.
Second, it depends on personal preference. Regular hinge hooks are the most popular, but if you want to be able to adjust the position of the hook, then adjustable hinges might be better for you.
Third, you should pay attention to the material, colour, and style of the strap hinges. For example, with stainless steel strap hinges, a stainless steel hinge hook would be the best fit. Similarly, you can combine your black strap hinges with black hinge hooks to keep everything in the same colour.

Wovar supplies galvanised steel and black powder-coated hinge hooks. Both types of hinge hooks are well protected against rust, corrosion, and oxidation. This ensures that you may enjoy beautiful door fittings from Wovar for years to come.
Galvanised Hinge Hook 10 mm (for lighter weights)
The hinge hooks for hinges with 10 mm eyes are available in blue galvanised steel and black powder-coated steel. Hinge hooks with a hook thickness of 10 mm are only suitable for hinges with an eye of 10 mm. These hinges are narrower and can hinge less weight. Often, these hooks are used for small (closet) doors.
Galvanised Hinge Hook 16 mm (most sold)
This galvanised steel hinge hook is suitable for hinges with an eye of 16 mm. The hinge hooks are frequently ordered in combination with our galvanised hinges. There is 19 mm between the mounting plate and the hook. This makes it so that when using flat hinges, your door, or gate will protrude slightly from the door frame. Offset hinges fall back 19 mm and allow your door and gate, in combination with these hinges, to rest exactly into your door frame. The hinge hook 16 mm is available in blue galvanised steel and in galvanised black powder-coated steel.
Adjustable Galvanised Hinge Hook 16 mm
The adjustable hinge hooks made of galvanised steel are most versatile when installing a garden door or garden gate. Because the hinge hook is adjustable, you can precisely adjust your door so that it fits nicely into the door frame. The adjustable hinge hooks are available in black hot-dip galvanised steel.
