Which beams are suitable to use?

Due to its net size of 14.5 x 14.5 cm, it is widely used for 15 x 15 cm beams, but it is also possible to use beams measuring 14.5 x 14.5 cm. Have thicker beams? Installing the 15 x 15 cm pergola corner extension

The black corner bracket with extension has 4 surfaces with mounting holes on them. On the long side, where the main beam lays across, you will find four mounting holes. The 3 other sides are each equipped with two fixing holes. These holes are 9 mm wide, which is why we recommend using our 8.0 mm thick coach screws. For example, use M8 x 80 mm coach screws.

After determining the correct position of the beams, pre-drill pilot holes in the wood. When using 8 mm thick screws, we recommend using a 6.5 mm hardwood drill bit. After pre-drilling, drive the screws firmly into the timber. Use a matching TX25 driver bit to tighten the screws.

Build an extra strong pergola

By fitting diagonal braces at the corner brackets and extension connectors, you make your pergola extra strong. You can easily attach these with two of our wafer head screws and a TX30 driver bit.

The required length of these wafer head screws depends on the length and thickness of the chosen diagonal brace. Below is an overview of the lengths you can use:

• A 50 x 90 mm brace = a 6 x 120 mm wafer head screw
• A 50 x 150 mm brace = a 6 x 140 mm wafer head screw
• A 50 x 200 mm brace = a 6 x 160 mm wafer head screw

To drive the wafer head screws in, you will need to pre-drill pilot holes. Drill these holes approximately 10 cm from the longest side of the diagonal brace.

Due to the length of the screws, a standard hardwood drill bit is not long enough to drill these holes. In this case, use our 6 x 230 mm auger drill bit. The depth of the holes should be 40 mm shorter than the length of the screw. For a 120 mm screw, this means a depth of 80 mm.

Handy tip: Use a 24 mm spade drill bit and enlarge the pre-drilled screw holes to a depth of 10 mm. This allows you to countersink the wafer head screws into the brace for a cleaner finish.
