When you have a new passage latch, you will also have to make some space for the strike plate. This strike plate jig for 71 x 23 mm strike plates is made for passage mortice latches, i.e. doors that do not lock with a key, but only with a latch that can be retracted with a handle or knob. This tends to be the case for internal doors. 

This strike plate jig is universal, meaning it can be used on both right and left hand doors. In addition to that, it can be used for straight and rounded strike plates. Before routing, we recommend securing the jig to the frame with 4 x 30 mm to prevent the jig from moving.

Why does my strike plate not fit in the mortice?

The shape of the strike plate in the jig perfectly fits a rounded strike plate. If your strike plate is straight, simply use a hammer and chisel or a knife to create straight corners. You can, as shown below, place the strike plate on the mortice, and draw a line around it, so you know exactly where to chisel.
